- The size of all opening must be considered, small to prevent your baby falling from the cot but large enough that little limbs and fingers do not

The mattress
- A cot mattress must be firm. While a soft mattress seems like it might be more comfortable, it can also be a safety hazard.
- The mattress must fit snugly within the baby cot with minimal gaps
